Balancing a book

All you will need to play this game is one book per player. Make everyone stand around in a circle. Each person is given an book. When the music starts, everyone has to walk around in a circle, trying to balance the books on their heads, until the music stops. People who drop the book from their head are eliminated. The player left at the end is the winner.

Grapevine

Get all the participants to sit on a circle. The person who starts the game whispers a sentence to the person sitting next to him, who in turn whispers what he has heard to the person next to him and so on, till all the players have heard it. No player is allowed to repeat the sentence. The last person says aloud what he has heard. Then the first person says aloud the original sentence. The deviations are invariably hilarious.

To make the game more interesting you may choose long sentences or tongue twisters like, ‘Betty bought some butter but the butter was bitter.

One can learn games to do in front of your family and close friends. Practice it before trying it on others.

Time management games are a great way to have fun in any environment and relieve stress in the office. They are appropriate for all ages, and best of all, anyone can enjoy them!

Riddles That Make You Smile

October 1st, 2008

Most riddles are a form of lateral-thinking puzzle. To get them, you have to move laterally in your mind, away from the expected line of thought. This is especially true of funny riddles. What did the others do when the cannibal was late for dinner? They gave him the cold shoulder, of course.

Then there are the riddles that aren’t really jokes, but they make you smile when you hear the answer. If a plane crashes on the border of the U.S. and Canada, in which country do they bury the survivors? They don’t bury survivors, of course. Laughter is good for the brain. Okay, I am waiting for the research on that, but it will be proven someday.

Oh, and no political jokes here. By the way, do you know what’s wrong with political jokes? They get elected! Okay, maybe just that one. Here are a few more riddles that will make you smile.

1. What did the instructor at the school for Kamikaze pilots tell his students?

2. Is it legal for a man to marry his widow’s sister in the state of California?

3. How many times can you subtract 5 from 25?

4. What two things can never be eaten for breakfast?

5. What did the fish say when he ran into a concrete wall?

6. Imagine you are in a sinking boat and surrounded by sharks. How do you survive?

7. Before Mount Everest was discovered, what was the highest mountain on Earth?

Answers To The Riddles

1. Watch this closely. I’m only going to do this once.

2. Probably not, since he’s dead.

3. Just once, because after you subtract anything from it, it’s not 25 anymore.

4. Lunch and Dinner.

5. “Damn.”

6. Just quit imagining!

7. Mount Everest, of course.

Printable Word Search for Kids

October 1st, 2008

Word searches (also known as “word search puzzles”) are a fun way for kids to pass the time. When kids are bored or a rainy day, or when travelling on a long journey, such as a plane or train trip, word searches can keep your kids busy. However, it would be wrong to regard these puzzles as simply a method of passing time - they can have educational benefits too - these is because in order to solve these puzzles, kids must pay close attention to the words being used and their exact spelling.

If you’re not familiar with this type of puzzle, here’s how they work:

1. An array of letters, arranged in rows and columns like a grid, is printed on a piece of paper. The array is usually square or rectangular, although sometimes you may encounter other shapes, such as a Christmas Tree shape used for a Christmas themed puzzle.

2. Hidden within the array are various words, each word following a straight line, but at any possible orientation (left to right, right to left, downwards, upwards, or any diagonal direction). The words can also overlap and intersect, and some letters in the array aren’t actually part of the words, but are just there to make the player’s task harder.

3. The player’s task, as the name of the game implies, is to search for, and find these words. The player’s should circle each word that they find.

You can of course buy books preprinted with word search puzzles. While some of these books are very good, the disadvantage is of course you can’t choose what words should appear in the puzzle. Another idea is to use your computer - with word search maker software, you can easily create your own puzzles - that way you can choose words appropriate for the age level of your children (perhaps even choose the words they need to learn for school spelling), and tailor the puzzles too (for example by avoiding difficult diagonal words if creating puzzles for younger kids).

Word Find Puzzle Maker

October 1st, 2008

Word find puzzles (also known as “word jumbles” or “word searches”) are a type of puzzle game. The objective of the game is to find words that are hidden within an array of letters. These games are not perhaps quite as difficult as some other kinds of pen and paper puzzles, but nevertheless many people enjoy solving them. Additionally, the relative ease of solving these puzzles makes them particularly attractive to children.

It should be remembered that word find puzzles can also have educational benefits, both in a K-12 environment, and for ESL (English as a Second Language) students. This is because solving these puzzles requires playing very close attention to the spelling of words.

It is possible to buy ready-made word find puzzles, but many teachers (and some parents) prefer to create their own puzzles. This allows them to tailor the difficulty of the puzzle, and the choice of words to be hidden within it, to their particular requirements.

Creating a puzzle yourself, is certainly possible, but it can require a lot of time and effort. It’s quite difficult to find a way of arranging words such that have significant overlaps and intersections, especially if you are aiming to pack the puzzle into a relative small grid.

A better alternative to creating the puzzle by hand, is to get your computer to do the hard work. With the help of word find puzzle maker software, it becomes an easy task. You simply enter a list of words, click a button, and a puzzle is generated immediately. If you don’t like the first puzzle design that appears, click the button again, and you can generate a new puzzle.
